Every summer, about this time, begins the craziness of back to school shopping for my kids. While I understand that they want all new stuff to start the new school year with, my wallet doesn’t necessarily align with their wants. So I have learned a few tricks throughout the years to make it a bit less painful for me.
Coupons in the Mail
In the past few weeks, I have begun to get a plethora of coupons in my mailbox, specifically for back to school clothes shopping. I can tell you that there were 3 that peaked my interest the most, due to past experience primarily, which were the coupons from Old Navy, JC Penney and Kohl’s.
The reason that I was immediately drawn to these 3 is because I have found that I am able to get the most bang for my buck at these places when combining their sales with the coupons. The coupons that I received from these stores were anywhere from an extra 15% – 20% off of their already low prices and two of them even included clearance and sale items in the deal.
Store sales this time of year can be a great deal, depending on the item. Just keep an eye out and make sure that the items you are looking at are really the ones affected by the sale. Take for example, Old Navy, and the sale they just had going on for $8 dresses for girls and $5 graphic tees. This sounded like a great deal for my kids. So I took them in there to take a look and see if they could find something within the sale parameters.
Unfortunately, the clothes that they picked out, even though on the racks labeled as the sale racks, were not on sale when we got to the register. They rang up one dress for my daughter and my son’s basketball shorts and graphic tee at over $50! This is the first time that I have encountered that at this particular establishment and I have to tell you that it left a bad taste in my mouth. I told them no thank you and we left.
JC Penney is having their own back to school special by offering 25% off of their regular prices right now. Although, some of their prices are discounted even more than that as well. If you combine that with the coupon for 20% off that I received in the mail, that is a pretty sweet deal. The only issue was that my kids couldn’t find anything that they were really thrilled about, this time. Therefore, this deal didn’t pan out for us this go around.
Kohl’s is always running sales of one kind or another, so that doesn’t seem to be any different from any other day. However, they do run more sales on kids and juniors clothes at this time of year, I have noticed. If you couple their sales with the coupon for 15% off that I received in the mail, it can end up meaning a good deal.
My kids found their back to school outfit at the latter of these 3 stores. My daughter got this really cute dress that was on sale for 50% off. My son chose these great blue and orange basketball shorts that were on clearance and a graphic tee that was on sale for 50% off. Combine those sale prices with my 15% off coupon and I got their outfits for a GRAND TOTAL of $29.88! I was pretty happy with that deal.
Consignment stores are popping up EVERYWHERE lately, and I think this is freaking fantastic. Seeing as I have consigned a lot of my own children’s clothes when they were younger, I know that these stores are very picky about the quality of clothes they purchase. Not only are the prices cheaper than purchasing new but I’ve even received emails from a couple of them with sales for back to school.
One of them was offering 25% off of your entire purchase, which I thought was great, especially because you can regularly get items for $4-$5, which is amazing! The other store was offering BOGO on shirts and pants, which was even better in my mind. There is something to be said for reusing gently loved clothing and doing so at rock bottom prices.
Don’t let back to school time stress you out and break the bank. What are some of the best ways that you have found to get back to school clothes without breaking your wallet?
I’ve Been Cable Free for 5 Years and Still Watch TV
While in debt, I cut cable and haven’t looked back. It’s easier than you think especially with new services out on the market. One of my favorites is Sling TV, which allows you to watch live TV on the internet. It’s awesome. Check out my Sling TV review.
