When I first had to get glasses in my early 20’s, I thought that I was going to be such a nerd from then on because wearing glasses wasn’t “cool.” Having worn them for 14 years now, I know that is a complete fallacy.
Don’t get me wrong, my first pair of glasses were the basic wire frame, and fairly boring, and cost me over $500! I cherished those things like gold. As time went on though, I started looking into how I could find a cheaper and more fashionable solution to my permanent lifestyle change.
My youngest brother (Grayson) had worn glasses for a few years before I had and turned me onto an online company that had really decent, yet affordable, glasses. I asked him the name of this magical company and that’s when he told me about Zenni Optical.
He told me that their glasses started at $6.95 a pair and shipping was only $4.95 for the entire order! There was no way this could be possible for prescription glasses. I had to check it out and see if he was messing with me.
The first time I went onto this site, it was love at first sight! They have a ton of different glasses and styles that all start at $6.95 but can get more expensive. When I say more expensive though, I don’t mean $500 a pair. We are still talking double digits here.
Zenni comes up with new styles ALL the time from different designers, not that I know who they all are but I never have a problem finding a style that works for me.
As you can see from one of my most recent orders, I was able to get two pairs of prescription glasses for only $79.85, and that was WITH shipping!
All of their glasses come with a hard case and decorative cleaning cloth. Each pair also comes standard with UV Protection, Anti-Scratch Coating and Single Lens. If you decide that you would like to add on a few extra features, such as their generic photochromic lens (which darken in the sunlight to turn your prescription glasses into sunglasses), they start as low as $19.00 per pair.
They also carry the Transitions brand of photochromic lenses, if that is your preference, which starts at $69.00 per pair. I have personally always chosen to add the photochromic lenses for a whopping $19.00 a pair and have loved them like nothing else. How can you beat that price for prescription eyewear that turns into sunglasses in 15-30 seconds if you are not interested in purchasing separate sunglasses or clip on’s?
They have other add on’s such as anti-reflective coating, super hydrophobic (water resistant) anti-reflective coating, oleophobic (keeps fingerprints and oil from sticking to lenses) anti-reflective coating bi-focals, tri-focals, Progressive lenses, different colored lenses, mid-index single vision, high-index single vision, polycarbonate single vision, trivex single vision, standard lens tint, gradient lens tint, blue blocking lenses and polarized lenses.
As you can see, the possibilities are endless! I have yet to try anything other than the photochromic lenses but have loved every pair that I have ever received thus far.
The one thing that I should forewarn you about is making sure that you have the correct prescription as well as your PD (pupillary distance) measured. This is really easy to do and the website can walk you through it.
Once you have all of your measurements then you can put in your prescription and PD into your profile, as well as upload a picture of yourself so that the program can “try” the glasses on your face to see what they would look like. This is a great option for those who are unsure of which styles they may want to try out.
What I have always done is taken a pair of glasses, so initially it was the one pair of glasses that I owned, and taken those measurements so that I knew what I should be looking for to fit my face. I can usually get away with straying a few millimeter’s one way or the other, but not always.
I have only ever had one pair of glasses that I strayed too far with and they kept falling off of my face every time I leaned down. I loved the look of them, and they were so cost efficient, so I kept hope alive that one day they would just stay put, but of course they never did. I eventually had to throw in the towel and concede to the fact that I made an error and ordered a new pair of glasses, that were in the same color family, but different style. I still have that pair to date and love them.
I have purchased all of my glasses from Zenni Optical for 11 years now. In that time, I have only broken 1 pair and had to get rid of the other pair, previously mentioned, that I ordered and didn’t fit me properly. The others are all still in pretty good, if not great working order, which means that I currently have 12 pairs that I trade off between, depending on my outfit.
If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, then I sincerely hope that you do. They have been a great find for me and really helped my wallet all of these years on a product that I must have to do things such as driving.
Have you tried Zenni Optical yet? If so, what has been your experience? If you haven’t checked them out yet, they should definitely be in your current line of sight!
