You shop online for two primary reasons: it’s more convenient and usually cheaper than going to the store. While you might think that simply shopping online allows to you get the best deal, you might be missing out on some additional savings. This article will show you how to save money on any online purchase by using a cash back portal to put some extra change back into your pocket.
What is a Cash Back Portal?
If you are unfamiliar with the money-saving option, a cash back portal is a website or app that you use to create a unique shopping session. For example, if you want to buy new clothes for the family from Kohl’s. The portal is offering 5% cash back when you complete a shopping session through the portal. So, if you spend $100, you get $5 back.
It takes an extra step instead of just going directly to the retailer website, but, most major retailers partner with portals to offer these rewards. At the end of the day, it’s still additional savings that you wouldn’t receive if you had not used the shopping portal.
To make it easier to open a cash back session, many of the portals have browser buttons you can install. When you land on a site that offers a rebate, a small button will pop-up that you can click and the portal will instantly start tracking your purchase.
The Best Cash Back Portals
While there are many portals to choose from, your credit card or frequent flier program might have their own version, these are some of the best portals to choose from.
Ebates is probably the largest and most widely known cash back portal. You have the potential to get cash back from over 2,000 stores and they also offer an in-store cash back option to approximately 30 stores by linking your credit card to your Ebates account and starting an in-store session from your smartphone.
If you are looking for a no-fee cash back credit card, Ebates, also has their own credit card that gives you an additional 3% cash back on Ebates purchases and 1% on non-Ebates purchases.
Payout Schedule: You can receive payment after earning more than $5 in cash rewards. They will send you a “Big Fat Check” for free in the mail or via PayPal on a quarterly basis.
Sign-up Bonus: $10 Ebates cash bonus or $10 Wal-Mart gift card after making a $25 purchase.
Giving Assistant is a relative newcomer, but, they also offer cash back discount to 2,700+ stores and offer high cash back rates than Ebates in some instances. Another cool feature about Giving Assistant is that they donate a meal for each cash back purchase. You can also donate your rewards to your favorite charity with Giving Assistant as well.

This portal helps you save money a little differently. Not only can you receive cash back bonus (Honey Gold) from shopping like Ebates does, but, Honey will automatically apply all the known discount codes on the checkout screen to save you some additional money. The other portals often list these codes, but, you have to manually enter them.
If you shop on Amazon this might be a good portal to use because of the discount code feature. Amazon rarely gives cash back when shopping through a portal, and you save time by not entering every single discount code in one at a time.
Payout Schedule: Receive a $10 Amazon gift card when you accumulate 1,000 “Honey Gold” points ($10 in cash back savings).
Sign-up Bonus: $1
Be Frugal guarantees to have the highest cash back rates of any portal & the widest offering as they have partnered with over 5,000 stores and an average cash back rate of 7%.
Like the Honey cash back app, Be Frugal will offer you cash back on your purchase and will also automatically enter the discount codes as well to reduce your order total.
Despite advertising a higher cash back rate, you do need to accumulate $25 in rewards to get paid. Depending on how infrequent you shop online, it might take some time to accumulate this reward amount & it might be better going with a cheaper portal that pays rewards of $10 or less.
Payout Schedule: Must earn $25 in cash back rewards and can be paid via PayPal, gift cards, or paper check.
Sign-up Bonus: $10 after earning first $25 in cash back rewards
Swagbucks is possible the most flexible portal in terms of earning rewards. Not only can you earn cash back by shopping online, but, you can also earn additional rewards by taking surveys and watching online movies.
The points can be redeemed for cash back using PayPal or gift cards, meaning you can spend time along with spending money to earn points. Also, you can redeem your points as soon as you meet the minimum redemption amount. They do not have quarterly payouts like Ebates, but, their minimum cash reward is $25 (2500 points). You can redeem points for retail gift cards for as little as $3 (300 points).
You get paid in Swagbucks points which are each worth about 1 penny each. So a $25 cash reward would cost 2,500 points and a $5 gift card costs 500 points.
Payout Schedule: Order on-demand when you have enough points (Swagbucks) to redeem for a cash or gift card reward. Cash rewards start at $25 (2,500 points) & gift cards start at $3 (300 points).
