Have you ever traveled to a place where you needed to use a car just on a temporary basis? Have you ever been with a friend and drove their car for a few days? Let me ask you another question. Did you call your car insurance company in order to get coverage to drive those other cars? If you are like me, then I would assume no.
The reason why I ask this question is because I had a friend tell me a little story about their car insurance issue. They were traveling in another state and decided to stay with a friend for a week. Their friend allowed them to borrow their extra car in order to get around the town they live in. This is probably a situation that many of you have been in. I know I have borrowed friends cars when I am staying with them. No worries, right? Wrong…..
My friend got into an accident when driving his friends car. It wasn’t a bad accident, but an accident none-the-less. Unfortunately for my friend, he didn’t contact his car insurance company in order to get short term car insurance. He thought his regular insurance policy covered him when he was driving any car, but that is rarely the case. It is not the same as AAA, who covers the driver, not the vehicle when it breaks down. Your car insurance policy protects you when you are driving your car or the cars listed on your policy. Some policies even protect you when you rent a car, but you might have to call them to make sure.
Since my buddy was without short term car insurance, he was on the hook for the damages. It was his fault and with no car insurance coverage on his friends car, he had to pay it in full. Ooops…..
What is Short Term or Temp Car Insurance?
Most of you probably have not heard of this type of coverage or have never needed it, but it does exist. Renting a car and getting insured is short term car insurance. It is the same principle. The policy is short term or temporary. Some insurers can give you coverage for as little as one day or up to a few months. It really depends on the company offering the coverage.
The purpose of short term car insurance is to cover you when you are driving a vehicle that you don’t own for a short period of time. It doesn’t matter if you are driving a friends car, test driving a used car, driving a car you will temporarily own. The coverage is just like your normal car insurance, but it usually cost less without affecting the coverage amounts.
It is advised that you shop around for such coverage if you need it. First, start out by calling your car insurance company and asking them what they offer. After that, call around to other companies. There are quite a few companies in the US and UK that offer this service, like the short term car insurance from Insure 4 a Day. No matter what company you choose, make sure that you understand the terms of the coverage and for how long your are covered.
Don’t get caught without the proper insurance when you are driving a vehicle that is not yours. Check your current policy to see what they cover and what vehicles they cover. Ask them for their short term car insurance rates and then shop around to find other deals. You don’t have to use your current insurance company, so don’t be afraid to call others. Shopping around is going to get you the best deal.
So, have you ever driven around without the proper coverage? Were you aware of short term car insurance and do you know of a time when you could have used it?
