In The Summer I Spend the Most Money On My Hobbies + Cash Giveaway

summer lovin giveawayIt is summer time my friends and it is time to spend some money, right?  Notoriously, the summer time is when many people spend a lot of their money on vacations and just travel time.  It happens, but as long as you have this extra spending in your budget, then you should be good to go.

When the summer time comes around, I do spend some extra money, but it is not on vacations.  I don’t like to travel much during the summer because I don’t like the amount of other travelers that are around along with the heat.  I don’t like the heat, so the only place I would travel would have to be much cooler than where I am.  Also, since I am not in school and I have a regular job, I don’t get the summer off.  This means that summer time is just another regular time for me, except that it is much hotter.

So, what do I spend my money on?  Well, as frequent readers of Debt Roundup know, I love cars.  I think they are fun to drive and even more fun to work on.  I have a project vehicle that is a 1990 Jeep Wrangler that I am rebuilding.  I got it for a steal and have been slowly working on it and building it back up to an off-road behemoth.  Having said that, rebuilding any vehicle is expensive.  If you are going to do it, you have to do it right.  I buy all of the best parts that I can get my hands on.

I think it is important to spend money on your hobbies and that is exactly what I do during the summer.  My project vehicle is my hobby and I love being under it and getting greasy when I am fixing something.  There is also no better feeling than buying a vehicle that doesn’t run and then being able to turn it on for the first time.  That is an exhilarating feeling.

Along with my project vehicle, I have started to get into golf.  I live near a golf course and there is a range about 5 minutes from my home.  I went out on the golf course for the first time a few weeks ago and had a good time.  While I didn’t play very well, it was still a lot of fun.  I have since started going to the golf range much more and have improved my game a little.  I plan on playing with my father a lot once I get up to a better level.  I plan on spending some extra money on this new hobby so I can get better.

As a usual article that I post, I want to know what you spend the most money on during the summer?  Do you set a budget for your extra spending or do you just deal with it after the fact?  The summer time can be a great time to learn new things, play some sports, and just get away.  I want to know what you are doing.

I definitely spend money on my hobbies in the Summer as well. I actually said “entertainment” is what I spend the most on, but I would group hobbies in that category as well. It’s so much easier to enjoy your hobbies when you have some money to invest in them.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:41 am — Reply

I probably would put hobbies in my entertainment category, since they do entertain me.

We don’t travel a whole lot in the summer either, but like to push it off to the early fall when it is cooler and do not have to deal with as many people travelling. The heat is bad enough where it is here without having to deal with all sorts of people on top of that. That’s cool you’re getting in to gold – that’s something I never have had the patience for.

I am with you there John. The heat coupled with more people just puts summer travel far down my list.

I used to golf weekly years ago, it’s a ton of fun! We’ll be spending our summer money on staining the barn – fun stuff, huh? :-) But we will throw in a few camping and beach trips too.

I’m not really sure that I do spend more money in the summer than other times. My son isn’t old enough for school yet, so summer break doesn’t really mean much to us. And we travel throughout the year. If anything, we’re probably out and about a little more so might spend some more on little things like ice cream, cold drinks, etc., but nothing that’s breaking the budget. It has been nice to spend more time at the parks and beaches though.

I agree about being out and about more. My wife and I really enjoy the outdoors, but we both hate the heat. When we can, we will go out and enjoy the day, but usually I am just tinkering with my Jeep.

We probably spend more money on food and entertainment in the summer with lots of get-togethers. Hobbies–I’m just saving up for my next purchase of CrossFit equipment.

The good ol’ CrossFit exercise regimen. I have heard things about it, but just haven’t tried it yet.

I usually spend more money during the summer on landscaping and house maintenance. Being a teacher, I don’ have much time to work on those type of projects during the school year. We allocate more money in our budget for these things during the summer months. If it will be a big project, we save in the months leading up to summer break.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:44 am — Reply

I can understand your position since you don’t have much time during the school year. I like to do home maintenance throughout the year, but that is easier for me.

  7. July 1, 2013 at 10:17 am — Reply

Rebuilding a vehicle is an awesome hobby Grayson! I use to have a neighbor that loved rebuilding old Mustangs. It must be exciting when it is all done and you know you did it on your own.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:45 am — Reply

It is a fun hobby, but it is expensive. That is why I have a Jeep budget, so when I have the money for a new part, I get it. There is nothing better than bringing a vehicle back to life.

  8. July 1, 2013 at 10:35 am — Reply

I spend money on home maintenance in the summer. Paint, stain and mulch. That is how I spend most of my time in the summer too. I had to pay (charge to Visa and have no idea how to pay it) for a new blog host this weekend as my old host has decided to close suddenly.

If you don’t like the heat why don’t you move to a cooler part of the country?

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:46 am — Reply

Sorry to hear about your host just shutting down.

I don’t like the heat, but I have a great job and our family is close, which is awesome with a baby. I can stand the heat for the summer because the fall, winter, and spring are perfect for me.

I’m not a big golfer, but I do enjoy playing tennis. We’re going on a Disney Cruise this summer, so we’re all pretty excited. :) Oddly enough, we do most of our big vacations in the winter and they have been to warm, sunny places where we can enjoy the beach. Because, you know, the beach at 60 degrees just isn’t good enough. :) We saved for 18 months for the cruise, so I am ready to go on vacation with Mickey Mouse!

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:47 am — Reply

I hope you enjoy the cruise Shannon. My wife and I love some cruises and we are planning on doing one down to the Caribbean one day. I agree that the beach at 60 degrees is no fun at all.

I spend my summertime money on eating out (mainly festivals) and impromptu purchases that happen there. I try and set a budget but I notice I’m having a hard time budgeting in general. This summer I hope to get better at it and do my best to stay within budget.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:49 am — Reply

At least you are aware of the problem. There are many people, like myself, where I budget just doesn’t make sense. I use a rough budget in a sense, but other than that, I just make sure that I am bringing in more than I spend.

  11. July 1, 2013 at 3:09 pm — Reply

We try and go up to Seattle to visit his family since it’s gorgeous in July/August, but most of the time we just bike on over to the beach to hang out and people watch.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:49 am — Reply

That is nice being able to just bike to the beach. I wish we had the ability.

Interesting that you will just buy beer, coffee, and juice. I assume you just like having a drink in your hand?

My husband spends money on golf in the summer, but it’s usually when we do go on vacation. I’ve ridden along on some really awesome courses. I’m kind of the lost golf ball finder. It’s a very important job!

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:51 am — Reply

I just started playing, but I enjoy it. I always need a good golf ball finder because those things can be hard to spot.

Like you, Grayson, I don’t like the heat. I am a creature of shadow and darkness, direct sunlight is upsetting to me. ;) Being able to fix up something must be really satisfying! I get jammed up on Ikea furniture.
You’re right, it’s easier to spend money on hobbies in the summer because of how nice the weather is. I don’t know that I have any particular outside hobbies…hmmm, maybe I should get some.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:52 am — Reply

I do love the outdoors though, just not in the summer time. I like the sunshine, but having high humidity is just deflating for the spirit.

  15. July 1, 2013 at 9:09 pm — Reply

I spend extra money camping and enjoying the great outdoors. I really like to take advantage of the weather and it keeps me out of more expensive hobbies (like golf and car restoration ;)

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:53 am — Reply

Haha, I see that wink there Michael. Though they are expensive, I make sure that I don’t go overboard. It can happen with a car, but if it is not your daily driver, then you don’t have to rush.

I love camping too and we do a lot of it, but usually in the fall.

In the summertime, I’m usually outside a lot more and will be more likely to grab a fancy drink somewhere because I am thirsty. This summer I might just carry a water bottle around more often :P Good luck with the golf!

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:54 am — Reply

I think a water bottle is a sensible solution. Thanks for the encouragement on golf.

I probably spend most of my money in the summer on booze and food, and a annual beach trip. Summer is the time for cookouts, so I feel like I’m always dropping cash on beer, hotdogs, and burgers.

    • July 5, 2013 at 9:55 am — Reply

We do love to cookout as you do, so the beer and food can be a big one. We try to spread our cookouts out throughout the summer time, so we are not overspending and overindulging.

I spend money during the holidays on local adventures. I’m like you, I actually prefer to take my holidays in non-summer times, as the commutes are easier in the summer with other people on holidays. I like to try local activities like kayaking, museum trips and theatre – you get lots of deals on those in the summer!

    • July 5, 2013 at 10:18 am — Reply

I do love local activities as well. You would be amazed how much there is to do locally if you really look for them.

  19. July 2, 2013 at 6:44 am — Reply

During the summer its a little bit of traveling but mostly activities for the kids and increased grocery bills since the kids are home most of the day. I really enjoy working on cars too but haven’t found the time or money to work on anything. I really like those Jeep Wranglers.

    • July 5, 2013 at 10:19 am — Reply

You have to have both time and money for car projects. I love my Wrangler as well and that is why it is my project vehicle.
